After T.H.O.T.

BEHIND THE MUSIC—For over 20 years, Dazié’s writing and performance work has adressed complex relationships at the crossroads of sexuality, identity, HIV status and recovery. With After T.H.O.T., Dazié completes a narrative arc that brings these complexities into the modern era. Being HIV+ and seeking sexual connection means something very different today than it did 20 years ago. The writing reflects the present moment of app-driven hookup culture, PrEP and undedectable viral loads with biting humor, critique and celebration. The dominance of hookup apps like Grindr inspired the use of the Grindr alert as a musical element—an immediately recognizable shout-out to the app’s users and the impact that app has had on sexual connections in the QUEER community. The album art features design and illustration by Derrick Miller-Handley that mingles the visual language of THE CHANGER & THE CHANGED with reference to Keith Haring, invoking the legacy of Haring’s sex-positive storytelling and HIV/AIDS activism while re-appropriating the African diasporic art that influenced his work as BLACK and QUEER.

Make Me Black

A body of original work featured in Dazié's award-winning solo show NIGGA-ROO. Fusing spoken word with Jazz and Hip-Hop, this album is a provocative and harrowing interrogation of racism and it’s impact on BLACK identity.

BEHIND THE MUSIC—Music has always been an essential source of inspiration in Dazié’s work and creative process. Early in the development of NIGGA-ROO, MAKE ME BLACK was conceived as a companion piece to that work. As one of the original members of The Deep Dickollective (one of the nation’s first black gay hip-hop groups), MAKE ME BLACK also marks Dazié’s return to recording music—this time as a solo artist. The album art was created by Derrick Miller-Handley in direct response to a Toni Morrisson inspired line in the titular track: “If your blue eyes are taken for granted, give them to me. I will make them more special than anything.”
